The Nnewi city International marathon (NCIM) delegation led by the initiator of NCIM, Mr. Chibuzo Okonkwo was in Awka, the Anambra state capital as part of its sensitisation tour of all relevant stakeholders.
The team visited Dr. Nelson Omenugha, the Special Adviser on Youth Empowerment to Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State and Hon. Patrick Onyedum Chairman of the Sports Commission in Anambra State respectively.
The NCIM team intimated the duo about the upcoming International Marathon and informed them on the level of preparedness by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the event.
Mr. Okonkwo observed that the Sports Commission is the main regulator of all sporting events in the State, hence the very important visit to seek the Commission’s collaboration and endorsement.
Similarly, Mr. Okonkwo noted that the delegation’s timely visit to Dr. Omenugha was also strategic because the marathon may not be a success without the participation of the youths who are known to be the main drivers of sporting activities globally.
In receiving the NCIM team the Chairman of the Sports Commission Hon. Onyedum applauded the initiative and observed that he is certain that in no distance time, Anambra State will be the preferred sports destination for both national and global sporting events going by the recently received large number of proposed sporting activities which will not only showcase Anambra State but also engage the youths and the good people of Anambra State.
Hon. Onyedum further stated that he was quite impressed at the level of progress made so far by the NCIM ’23 LOC and assured the team that the Commission will provide all necessary assistance required to make the marathon a success.
He concluded by calling on more Anambra sons and daughters to emulate Mr Chibuzo Okonkwo.
Dr. Omenugha in his response applauded Mr Okonkwo for such a wonderful and noble idea noting that there is no better way of describing this marathon than a youth empowerment project.
He further stated that he was confident that the youths will turn out in their numbers, believing that the top prizes will be won by Anambra youths.
